After an unbelievable final dinner with dad in Buenos Aires, we flew to El Calafate to begin our father-daughter Patagonia journey. We decided to rent a car, which would turn out to be very difficult to drive as the wind was so strong. While driving through the town I was reminded of Interlaken, Switzerland as it had a very European feel and was situated on a lake – really cute little town. We dropped our things off at our hostel (with the most gracious owners I’ve ever met) and headed to our Perito Moreno Glacier tour. As soon as we started driving it began to rain…and then pouring by the time we reached the glacier. As it was our first day, we were slightly underprepared and therefore freezing, but it was an adventure nonetheless. Due to the rain, the visibility was horrible from the lookouts and we were so worried that we wouldn’t be able to see the glacier as we got closer, since it was so foggy. Luckily, we were able to get right up close, directly in front of the glacier, and had no problem seeing. It really was quite a sight, and an enormous one at that. Despite being cold, the Perito Moreno Glacier tour blew my mind. We hiked around in the rain for a while, determined to see the glacier cleave. First we saw two “tiny” pieces break off and we were amazed at how loud it sounded. We were thinking to ourselves how loud it must sound if a “big” piece fell off. Well, as if right on cue, a piece three-quarters the height of the face plunged into the water, sending a roaring sound into the air and producing huge waves that crashed onto the beach. Quite a sight to behold.
